Illustrated by Pat Pollock Rhoads

Age Range: 8-12
Dawn Till Dusk/De la aurora al crepúsculo is the first book in Mrs. Retana's medieval
trilogy. Mrs. Retana and Mrs. Rhoads, the illustrator for the trilogy, have been researching
medieval times for years and have also visited and lived in Castello Di Bibbione,
a medieval castle, in the heart of Tuscany, in Italy. The castle was originally built in
997 and through the centuries many architectural transformations have been taking place,
and many noble families have lived in it. In 1511 Castello Di Bibbione was bought by the
writer Niccolo Machiavelli and became his summer hunting lodge. It is here in this
breathtaking place where Mrs. Rhoads sketched the various parts of the structure of the
castle for the trilogy while, Mrs. Retana let her imagination soar when picturing herself
living in this castle at the beginning of the 1300's.
Real People Playing Medieval Characters
Mrs. Retana's and Mrs. Rhoads' family and friends have gracefully agreed
to join in on this historical fiction as they play different characters in the trilogy.
Even the domestic animals that the reader will find throughout the adventure are real
animals that along with the people, have modeled for Mrs. Rhoads.
